Camp was just absolutely…..dare I say….”Phenomenal”!  Just when you think nothing could be better than the previous year, our teenagers just one-up the whole thing and WOW us again.  We had 2 students from Berean trust Christ this week and many others from our church make decisions for HIM.  Hearts were stirred and lives were changed.  Our prayer now is that Satan can be totally frustrated due to the changes in hearts being lasting ones.  Camp is a very isolated place with no TV, movies, music, internet, etc.  Once back into the daily grind of life, Satan will attack like the snake he is and attempt to blow these teens out of the water and try to make their decisions of no effect.  Please be in prayer as we are that God’s word stays strong in them through these next few trying days and weeks.

On a personal note, my heart was truly ministered to by our Berean teenagers.  There is a pain in my heart these days and the love our teens showed to Kym and I just really is God’s love being shown through them.  Teen work is tough work.  You wonder if you’re even getting through to them, and if they even know how much you care for and love them.  There are many days it doesn’t seem worth it, but those are few and far between when you work with Berean teens.  PARENTS, your teens truly are amazing.  Yes, every Youth Pastor says that and thinks that his teens are the best.  However, I’d put ours teens up there with any in the world.

The spirit of all the campers and churches represented was a blessing.  As a camp director, I didn’t have to handle any disputes or problems the entire week.  Folks just got along and helped build an amazing atmosphere in which God could freely work.  We ended up having a little over 300 total campers in attendance.  There were 12-Salvations, 20-Rededications, and 2 for Full-Time service.  In addition, another 20 campers stood up on Friday stating they made a life-changing decision for God this week.  Needless to say, seeing 54 students standing up across the front of the camp stage was, “Incredible!”

VERSE of the DAY (weekend verses): Phil 1:6, 8-11  “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; 10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; 11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Now, it just wouldn’t be an appropriate Harper post without a soothing and encouraging word about EL GATO.  EL GATO was at camp with us.  No, not in person, but in spirit.  He even found his way onto a shirt of mine and into 2 camp books of the students.  I want you to know that having him here in Mesquite is cool, but taking him with you and having him be such an encouragement while you’re away is…well…….just so heartwarming.

  • Thanks for the comment!  Brett, Leigh, and the boys are really loving Berean – you guys have really welcomed them in.  I am just glad they are living here now – more time to see the boys 🙂  They had a great time at the cookout!
I remember your many posts about el gato – where did that come from?  Glad to hear how well camp went!
